Albany Empire’s Malachi Jones is Heading to the NFL

Malachi Jones took the Arena Football landscape by storm this past season when he scored 34 touchdowns in his first season in the Arena Football League. Now he’s been given a shot to crack the Chicago Bear’s 53-man roster. Jones was just signed to the Bear’s 90 man roster and will compete in training camp for a spot on the team as either a wide receiver or try his luck with special teams.

I give Malachi a decent shot at at least making the practice squad because being a professional athlete is in his bloodline. First off Jones’ father, Andre, won the 1988 National Championship with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as a linebacker and went on to play for the Steelers and the Lions. His uncle, Phillip Daniels, played 14 season in the NFL and is currently a defensive coach for the Eagles. His brother, T.J., currently plays for the Lions as a wide receiver. And lastly his other brother, Jahmai, was selected in the 2nd round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim.

If not this season, I can definitely see Malachi squeezing his way onto an NFL team. This past year in the AFL Jones earned Wide Receiver of the Year, First Team All-Arena, and Rookie of the Year honors and helped solidify a top playoff seed for the Empire. In college Jones helped his Appalachian State Mountaineers get to their first ever bowl game.

Wherever he is, the kid has an impact.

I wish Malachi the best and I’m pretty confident that instead of watching him an Saturdays in Albany, we will all soon be watching him on Sundays via a pirated NFL Sunday Ticket website. Good luck Malachi. You will be missed.
