Snap Inc. has announced their new glasses ‘Spectacles’ and millennial hipsters are hyped. The new glasses can take 10 second videos with just a tap of a button and send them directly to the user’s Snapchat account. The camera records in a 115 degree view which creates for a much more realistic feeling when watching the footage.
Snap Inc. formerly known as Snapchat, is hoping to break into augmented reality. A market that Apple, Google, Samsung and even Willy Wonka himself could not succeed in.
What’s their plan for not failing like the rest? It’s simple, keep them affordable and more of a toy that can be used casually compared to an entire computer operating system on your face. Augmented reality glasses have failed countless times in the past. Most notably was the infamous Google Glass. Google Glass never reached mainstream attention due to its $1,500 price tag and robotic appearance, but Spectacles have taken a different route. The product rolled out with a colorful, retro-lite look and a sizzle reel of some roguish young people recording their skateboard tricks and will be available for a mere $129
If there is a company that can make augmented reality cool it’s Snap Inc. We can’t forget they did make one of the most popular apps of our generation by taking the age-old picture and text and adding a self-destructing feature which literally hypnotized our entire generation.
