I was shook after reading about a boy who asked his own Grandma to senior prom, and then I saw this happened in Alabama and it had a whole new sense of normality.
18-year-old Bryce Maine, a senior at Eufaula High School, wanted his grandmother to finally enjoy the formative soiree she missed so many years ago. So without cutting any corners, he surprised “Nanny” with a canvas of colorful paint surrounding the word “Prom?”
She said yes (luckily) and immediately went out and got spruced up with a fresh dress.
“I just thought, well, it’s just so nice that he wanted me to go,” Catherine Maine told WTVM. “I kept asking him, ‘Don’t you want to take someone else?’ But he kept saying, ‘No, I want my Nanny.’ So I was just so shocked, privileged that he asked me.”
But the rush Nanny was feeling went out the window when the school administration spoke up.
In a statement to “Inside Edition,” Eufaula City Schools principal Steve Hawkins said the prom attendees must be 20 years old or younger, and he cannot bend the rules.
On Monday, Bryce’s father met with school officials seeking a compromise, but nothing changed, reported Fox News’ Todd Starnes.
Bryce told WTVM the reason the school gave him was “alcohol . . . in case, you know, she was trying to distribute it to minors.”
This is complete BS. I for sure went to a prom as a college junior with my roommate Ben and I think we were the stars of the show.
Sure we had a few beers before, but weren’t out there distributing alcohol to minors. I can only imagine that Nanny would have caused no more ruckus and it’s a damn shame she was denied. I went to 4 proms, Nanny went to 0 ð
Regardless of the rules, people were piiiiiiiissed, like Sarah Catherine, Bryce’s cousin, who posted an angry message about the decision on Facebook.
“My blood is boiling right now,” it began. “My little cousin Bryce wanted to take our Grandma to his senior Prom since she has never been. Well after she . . . bought her dress and made plans, the principal decided that they cannot do that anymore . . . Like really? Eufaula High School let my Grandma go to Prom!”
As of early Tuesday morning, four days before the prom, the post was shared more than 4,700 times and included more than a thousand comments.
Fortunately there are still good people in this world, and the good folks at the local country club offered to host the duo for dinner after Bryce declared he would not be attending the prom.
“She’ll wear her gown and I’ll put on my tuxedo and we will get all dressed up, go out to a fancy meal, and have our own prom at Eufaula Country Club who invited us to dine on Saturday and maybe take a spin on the dance floor. I’ve picked out some of the songs she liked from back in the day – a lot of Elvis,” Bryce said.
This sounds like an incredible compromise, you know why? Because at the country club Nanny won’t need to sneak in her alcohol, there will be plenty there.
