Everyones talking about the world one day ending, and all of humanity falling to some sort of debacle that erases us from the planet. Are you worried? Don’t be, because it’s happening regardless.
Outside of nuclear war, catastrophic natural disasters like tsunamis and earthquakes, zombie apocalypse, and another very popular demising fear, is the enslavement of mankind by artificial intelligence. Basically robots and technology developing at such a rapid pace that humanity can’t keep up, eventually leading to the demise of humans by their own creation. Scary shit right? Fuck it though.
Let me break it down for you, heres some facts derived from a beautiful article by Mark Wilson.
Essentially, Facebook made bots that were created to solely be artificial intelligence agents to sift through the depths of Facebook making various consumer and intellectual trends within the Facebook community. You know how when you search for a nice pair of shoes, and then similar styles and websites randomly start popping up on your feed? Yeah, that’s those bots at work. Turns out, these bots are doing more then just directing you towards products and pages, they’re starting to communicate, WITH EACH OTHER.
There are conversation threads between bots using written language in ways that humans can’t comprehend. This has lead to the creation of a distinct dialect among the artificial intelligence community. Basically, technology we created is developing a synthetic consciousness and passing coded messages to one another, and we have no capabilities, as of now, to know what the fuck they’re even talking about.
The question is, what made the bots decide to hide their intentions? I have no idea, but I can’t help but think of the array of movies where humans are overtaken by robots, so, fuck.
As stated in Wilson’s article
“Agents will drift off understandable language and invent codewords for themselves,” says Batra, speaking to a now-predictable phenomenon that Facebook as observed again, and again, and again. “Like if I say ‘the’ five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn’t so different from the way communities of humans create shorthands.”
The other issue, as Facebook admits, is that it has no way of truly understanding any divergent computer language. “It’s important to remember, there aren’t bilingual speakers of AI and human languages,” says Batra. We already don’t generally understand how complex AIs think because we can’t really see inside their thought process. Adding AI-to-AI conversations to this scenario would only make that problem worse.
Check that article out man, creepy shit, but interesting as fuck. In a nut shell, be weary of your social media tendencies, lets not continue to pour our raw thoughts into the internet and have some sort of mental independence before we vessel every thought and feeling into the internet as somebody is always watching. As great as the internet is, we’re beginning to use it for our every need and to display our every thought, how about we just tell a friend, in person, while our cellphones record our audio and input it into an artificial intelligence database anyway. Cheers to our demise.
