It’s that time of the year that artists and bands begin announcing their summer tours. Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is the major outdoor venue in Upstate New York, and fans all across upstate get excited to see the lineup each season.
Last year, Taylor wrote a post about SPAC’s 2017 lineup. And guess what? She thought it was a total snooze fest and honestly, to me it feels like it has been that way for several years.
I don’t have anything against the bands that usually come to SPAC (except Dave Matthews). But at the same time, do I want to spend a good chunk of change to see SPAC’s typical bands play? Nah, I would rather create a playlist and jam out at a barbecue.
Last week, Dave Matthews announced he will be returning to SPAC again this summer. SURPRISE! But luckily this year, I feel like the lineup is getting a little better. Here’s who we’ve got so far:
Kendrick Lamar: June 9
Dead & Company: June 11
Foreigner: June 16
Keith Urban: June 27
Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers: June 30
Rascal Flatts: July 7
Dave Matthews Band: July 13 and 14
Jason Aldean: July 15
Dierks Bentley: August 5
Luke Bryan: August 19
It’s not a bad lineup of concerts so far, I’m interested in seeing Dierks Bentley and possibly Keith Urban. Country fans will certainly love this list of artists.
But, for those of us who aren’t country music fans, we might be a little disappointed with the lineup. And that got me thinking, why can’t SPAC pull in better acts like other venues can? Well, the Capital Region does have some great places to see shows, which could be a reason why its tough to draw certain artists to Saratoga. There was another major concert announcement last week –Jack White will be performing over in Cooperstown at Brewery Ommegang on May 27. He’d be someone I’d love to see play in the 518 area and Ommegang is definitely creeping up as one of the better venues.
To go along with those major announcements on Thursday, the lineup for Mountain Jam was released. It’s an impressive lineup which includes headliners such as Jack Johnson, Alt- J, Sturgill Simpson and Portugal. The Man.
So maybe artists would prefer to play at a festival rather than create their own show? Maybe the booking agents over at SPAC aren’t reaching out hard enough to convince these artists to come there? (Try persuading them with doughboys).
Some of us at Two Buttons Deep have our own wish list going for who we would love to see come to the Capital Region, and preferably play at SPAC. What would your dream lineup be?
Jack: Jack Johnson, Bruno Mars, John Mayer, Zac Brown Band (he’s a regular that appears at SPAC already), Thomas Rhett (he’s coming to the Times Union Center).
Kyle: Arctic Monkeys, Portugal. The Man, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, Kid Cudi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Greta Van Fleet.
Taylor: VÉRITÉ, The Lumineers, Chance the Rapper, Childish Gambino, Bahamas, Maggie Rogers, Leon Bridges, Lorde.
