Breaking news as reported by Variety:
Sources tell Variety that the movie is not a sequel to Universal’s 2004 film starring Billy Bob Thornton, nor is it based on NBC’s TV series with Kyle Chandler. Instead, it’s a new property, though still focused H.G. Bissinger’s non-fiction book about the 1988 Permian High School Panthers as the new Texas football team makes a run towards the state championship.
I’ve said this a million times but my number 1 regret in life is the fact that I didn’t play high school football. Whenever my buddies came home from college, we would go out, get a 30 rack and slam beers while watching the original movie.
There would always be a heated debate on who the better full back was, Billingsley or Riggins. The next day would be filled with eating Stewart’s cheeseburgers, running slants on Terry Jones field and listening to the theme song over and over and over. We’d have a tackle football game up at my buddies camp at Sacandaga just because we wanted to live life like a Dillion/Permian Panther.
Would I end up developing a terrible Texas accent? For sure, but don’t worry, it would only last all of 24-48 hours. But why? Why were myself, my friends, and plenty of other people obsessed with this show/movie? Because these kids lived the god damn American dream.
In Texas, high school football players are worshiped, high school football players got the hottest girls and high school football players built a bond with their teammates that would never be broken. High school football is nails.
I’m very interested to see what direction this new movie goes in. They say that it will be an entirely different cast, which is exciting and disappointing at the same time. Other than Michael Scott, Coach Eric Taylor is the best TV character of all time. *I know this is an extremely hot take but I’m sticking with it*
Tim Riggins was a heartbreaker and Lyla Garrity still has my heart.
I PRAY Buddy Garrity somehow sneaks back in to this movie because his life is nothing but pork chops and High School football.
I will miss Boobie Miles and his uncle. “And he can pass!”
The Mike Winchell and Matt Saracen awkwardness won’t be around and I’m good with that. If you’re a QB 1 in Texas High School football you should be a STUD, not some babbling fool. Julie Taylor was the worst human being of all time and I’ll miss Tammy Taylor getting all foxy.
The most crucial part of this movie will be the casting. I was Peter Pan in the fifth grade play in case they’re looking for a newer, slightly out of shape QB1.
Who would you guys cast to play this movie? Am I the only one fired up for this? God dammit, I love high school football and CANNOT WAIT for this to come out.
