I was meandering around the Troy Farmers Market this past weekend with my dog Duke. It was raining and so the turnout was underwhelming, but I like it that way. No lines!
Anyway, I made my way to the center of the action AKA Monument Square. It’s normally hustling and bustling with thousands of people, but there were just a few people scattered here and there due to the weather. Train’s, “Marry Me” was being played by the market’s musician and it was for a good reason. A marriage proposal was going on right there!
I caught a quick second of the proposal before my phone died, then I enjoyed the rest of the moment the old fashioned way: with my eyes. There were a few cheers from passerby’s, and they had a nice lady capturing the whole thing on video (in portrait mode, yikes).
It was a very sweet moment, probably could have used better weather and a bigger audience, but something about rain means good luck, right? Sure.
The part of this that stood out to me was that there was a dog involved in this proposal.
I can’t confirm that this wasn’t already an existing pup, but from what I saw, he was revealed in the process and the way he was celebrated in the embrace made it seem like the pup was part of the deal.
Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of this either –I’ve seen stuff on the internet of people throwing puppies, cars and other finer things into the deal of a marriage proposal. And it made me think, is including a puppy into a marriage proposal fair game?
Listen, if you’re agreeing to live a life together I’d much rather be bounded by the love of a dog than a god damn ring. Because guess what, engagement rings are literally a marketing scam invented by a diamond company in the 1930’s to boost sales. Also a puppy is a hot test to see if your partner in crime in eligible to raise a living being.
And plus, if you have a puppy during the proposal and the answer is no, guess what? You have yourself a new puppy. It’s a lose-win.
What are your thoughts? Is this fair game? Is it FAIR at all?
