Just when you thought the National Anthem protests were going away, Comissioner Rodger Goodell and other NFL CEO’s have decided to fine players and teams that kneel during the Anthem.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Goodell stated, “Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room or in a similar location off the field until after the Anthem has been performed.”
If players decide to take the field during the Anthem and kneel they and their teams will be subject to fines. The move outraged the NFL Player’s Association (NFLPA) and to them, it seems this new rule looks to do more harm than good. The union struck back and released a statement that was critical of the Goodell decision:
Apparently there also was no vote for this policy, but the owners have approved it, according to ESPN.
This is going to cause a huge rift between the owners and players –more than it already has. Not because of morality, but now it’s going to cost teams and players money for going against the grain. I can see this costing the NFL in the long run –and I feel they should have just left it alone.
The fear is that fans won’t watch the sport because the players and coaches are choosing to protest before the game is even kicked off. But let’s be honest, the NFL is king and will always have a hold on the sports market. Their numbers are far bigger than any other sports league in our nation, but with this way of thinking, the days of the NFL being at the top might be numbered.
Other high profile coaches and players in other leagues, who won’t get fined if they talk about it, have come out and said just how stupid the decision was. There has to be an easier way for both sides to come to an agreement without the NFL slamming the gavel without consulting in the player’s union.

With training camp right around the corner, there’s going to be a noticeable divide between the ownership and the players. I won’t be surprised if this ends in some kind of strike and the NFL reversing the decision. They are basically playing a game of chicken that I believe they will lose.
