Hot Take: 2011 Was The Greatest Year of Music

The other day I was sitting at work trying to figure out what to put on Spotify. Normally I’m a country music guy but for one reason or another I felt the need to get a little frisky. I decided to find a playlist so I wouldn’t have to keep manually searching tunes.

Because I’m a champion, I wanted the best of the best and began brainstorming songs from certain eras of my life. Names like Ja Rule, Petey Pablo and Sean Paul came to mind as my face began to smile and my hips began to not lie. I then had an epiphany.

I needed to figure out what year had the best music.

I may be in the minority but I think music SUCKS now. Remember old Kanye? Good Life, Jesus Walks, or Workout plan. Those were absolute BANGERS. What do we have these days? A bunch of artists who think they’re so important that they try to be so trendy, so different, just so people think they’re cool. I’m all set on that. I took time to reflect and I discovered that 2011 was the year that fucks. 2011 was the year that music took over the radio waves with jam after jam. Don’t believe me? Here are the top 100 songs of 2011.

Some of this may have to do with the fact that I was in college and the bars became a big part of my life but really look at these songs. Adelle was just beginning to make her mark on the world, Katy Perry wasn’t crazy yet, Nicki Minaj had her butt swinging, Rihanna’s “We Found Love” was released which is my generations anthem, and Ke$ha was wearing SO MUCH glitter. One song that wasn’t on this list, that came out in 2011, was a little song called Levels. Ever heard of it?

And the music videos? OH LORD THE MUSIC VIDEOS!!

Maybe I’m just not as artistic as the average human. Maybe I don’t appreciate artists expressing themselves in 2018. Maybe you’re right! But you cannot tell me that there wasn’t a year that had the AUX cord buzzing the way it did back in 2011. 2011 was a year full of dreams and dance.

I miss you, please come back soon.
