Successful UAlbany Alum Gives Me Hope That I’m Not a Piece of Shit

Nora Lum, AKA Awkwafina, is a 2011 graduate of the University at Albany. She was a journalism major and minored in women’s studies. While attending UA, Awkwafina interned at the Times Union for a semester and now in 2018 has had a year to write home about. She was in the hit movie Crazy Rich Asians, she hosted SNL and she now is about to star in her own show on Comedy Central.

That’s fuckin awesome. Her and I have a lot of similarities and I would like to be able to ride her coattails to stardom, if she ever notices me. You see, I also study journalism at the University at Albany and I too interned at a newspaper, the Daily Gazette. We are practically the same person and that has me hoping that maybe one day I can stop making minimum wage and become a star as well.

If you don’t know who Awkwafina is you should look her up. She’s a stand-up comedian, writer, rapper, actress and is now about to have her own show on Comedy Central. How badass is she?! She’s not from the area, but the fact that we have the same alma mater means that I can bask in her success, right?

This past year alone Lum’s had roles in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians and audiences have fell in love with her humor and brash character. She’s been a youtube sensation for a few years and as of late has garnered national attention. Check her out:

Btw that vid has almost 3 million views.

Comedy Central has now jumped on the bandwagon and even titled the show Awkwafina. That’s pretty straight forward. The show itself is about Lum’s life as an Asian American living at home in Queens. The series was green lighted for 10 episodes and I’m really excited to see how it does.

We already have a local star on Comedy Central currently. Adam Lustic, a Voorheesville graduate, has just shot his second season co-starring in the show Corporate and the LA comedian based out of the 518 is enjoying a lot of success that I’ve claimed stake in. This is just another person that I’m basically exactly like who can make me a star.

I really hope that Lustic and Lum don’t read this article and think how much of a piece of shit I am for trying to catch their crumbs of success, but if they’re into helping a brother out that has some common ties, I would like to eat off their plate.

One of these days I’m hoping to break through, but for now I’m basking in other people’s success that have strains of similarities to my own. So basically in my mind I’ve already made it vicariously through others. I just need to correlate this in a monetary value, which I’m far from figuring out…So until then, I’ll continue waiting tables.
