HUGE day here in the Collins house as the NHL preseason has started and my beloved New York Rangers are on tonight. Players like Kaapo Kakko, Artemi Panarin, Jacob Trouba and Adam Fox are making their debuts in blue tonight but it’s bittersweet for me. As most of you know my old man, the Sheriff, passed away in April and normally I’d be getting home from work right about now, grabbing his card and flying down to Stewarts for our Rangers game night meal of Stewarts deli dogs. He might not be here but you know damn well I’m doing it anyway. This got me thinking, I think it’s about time to share with you guys how to make arguably the best food in the world, The Sheriff Dog. Now, this process can be used on any type of hot dog but to get the pure Sheriff dog taste, they need to be from Stewarts.
Step 1: Spicy Brown Mustard
It’s crucial to start your hot dog out with a foundation and there is none better than the spicy brown mustard. It adds enough snarl to the dog to make sure you’re paying attention, all the while enjoying a spicy little treat.
Step 2: Onions
We talked about the foundation of the dog and onions provide two distinct qualities. The first is crunch. Hot dogs in its entirety are generally a softer type of dish, but just like placing chips on a sandwich, onions provide a little texture. Number two is the food pyramid. Hot dogs are not known for being healthy so adding unions allows you to tell your girlfriend, mother, gym trainer or anyone else that you are making a conscious effort to eat clean.
Step 3: Place the Hot Dog
Grab those tongs placed upon the hot dog den and gently place your dog into position. This isn’t really all that hard but it is imperative that you place it on your bun correctly. Think about the game of Operation that we all played as kids. Not too gentle, not too firm, just the right amount of touch.
Step 4: Classic Yellow Mustard
Now that you have your foundation and your dog, you need to add a little to the outside. You want every bite to take over your taste buds and you don’t want to leave any bland type of vibes. By doing this, you’ve surrounded your dog with a taste type of explosion, which is must needed when consuming a Stewarts deli dog.
Step 5: Repeat The Process
You can’t just have one. You need two. Why? Because Stewarts has great deals and because once you’ve consumed one, you’re going to want more. Trust me.
Step 5: Dr. Pepper
I don’t drink soda a lot but when I do it’s when I’m having a couple Sheriff dogs. The Dr. was my dads favorite and naturally as any son does, you want to be just like your old man. It’s a special little treat, much like a dessert.
The next time you go to Stewarts give this a try. You won’t regret it. Not only will you be enjoying one of the delicacies in life, you will be eating like a king.
I miss my dad more than anyone will ever even remotely comprehend but his legacy lives on with the New York Rangers and with Stewarts deli dogs. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Lets go Rangers!
